Another way is to convert "X is better than nothing" to "X is better than having nothing" before storing it in the database. I currently have no easy way of making a rule to do this at runtime, so I had to hardcode it, which I don't like doing. Theoretically, it should be possible without too much work to include preprocessing rewrite rules (right now I have postprocessing rewrite rules which I was having trouble using in this case because I would have to delete the already-stored "X is better than nothing"...).
